While Europe appears at great risk for a recession as traders bet on aggressive rate rises by all the European central banks, the Fed is still expected to be nearing the end of their respective rate hiking campaign. The focus in the US will fall on the PCE readings. If inflation comes down as expected, the swap futures might grow even more confident that the Fed will only deliver one more rate hike.

US Street is starting to get nervous as we near the X-date. A US default seemed unimaginable a couple of weeks ago and despite a lot of positive comments from both sides, negotiations will go down to the wire and that means the risk that it falls apart is growing. Treasury Secretary Yellen will soon provide an update on the X-date and that could show talks might have an extra week from the current June 1st deadline to get a deal done.

Europe took centre stage last week as leaders waited nervously to see if gas would start flowing through Nord Stream 1 again following scheduled maintenance (it did) and the ECB raised its deposit rate to 0%, ending eight years of negative rates. Next week the focus switches back to the US which has a big interest rate decision of its own and a number of major earnings reports.

US stocks only had one way to go after inflation fears intensified and raised the risk of stronger tightening by the Fed and a much sooner recession. Asian markets eye Ukraine-Russia talks
Overnight, news that a second Ukraine-Russia meeting in sunny Belarus sparked a relief rally in equities markets, which was given more momentum as Jerome Powell signally the Fed would only hike 0.25% this month, instead of 0.50%. As I said previously, peak-Ukraine FOMO is strong in equity markets right now, and the outcome of today’s meeting will dictate entirely whether this is yet another sucker’s rally.
