U.S. Vice President Mike Pence asked Japanese business leaders Wednesday to expand their investment and employment in the United States, while also calling for “high levels of market access” as Washington is seeking to launch free trade negotiations with Japan.
Pence met with Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda and other business leaders in Tokyo after he attended Tuesday the first round of a high-level economic dialogue between the two countries. He said the United States will support Japanese firms investing in the country, according to participants of the meeting, most of which was closed to the media.
In a speech later in the day, Pence said the United States wants to foster a trade relationship that is “both free and fair and benefits the two nations.”
Trade barriers must be broken down and playing fields must be leveled “so that American companies and exporters enjoy high levels of market access,” he said.
