Oil drifting, gold edges higher
Oil rally stalls Oil prices are relatively flat on Tuesday as global economic fears and the prospect of tighter restrictions in Beijing take some of the heat out of the rally. Brent and WTI are trading right at the upper end of the range they've been within the last couple of months, with tight supplies, easing restrictions in Shanghai and a potential EU ban on Russian oil imports driving the price higher. As has been the case for months now, there are so many countering forces in the market tha

Oil trades sideways, gold edges higher
Oil markets continue to slumber Oil prices moved sideways once again overnight, trading in relatively narrow ranges as China growth fears cap the upside of prices, while the Ukraine conflict and the refined petroleum product supply squeeze in the US support the downside. Brent crude finished 0.70% higher overnight at USD 113.35 a barrel, with WTI unchanged at USD 110.55 a barrel. In Asia, downgraded China GDP growth forecasts and increasing worries about wider virus restrictions in Beijing has p

US Close - Stocks rally on Biden's tariff comment, Euro rallies on Lagarde Hawkishness, Oil choppy, Gold rallies, Bitcoin struggles
US stocks are rallying over optimism that President Biden could be positioning for a major de-escalation in the US-China trade war and over selling exhaustion. After eight weeks of selling pressure for the Dow and a seven-week losing streak for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, a rebound was long overdue.  Many are rationalizing today’s rebound with the logic that much more downside would only be warranted if a recession was likely to happen early next year and that won’t be determined for a few more

Oil steady, gold
Economic fears slow rally in oil Oil prices are only marginally higher at the start of the week as Europe's failure to agree on a ban on Russian oil and economic fears offset the Shanghai reopening. Hungary is still holding out against the deal but the bloc is confident that it will get over the line.

Oil calm, gold rises
A quiet day for oil markets Oil prices edged higher on Friday in New York, as the persistent squeeze in refined petroleum products in the US, and ever-present Ukraine/Russia risk underpinned prices, with China slowdown and US recession noise limiting gains. Mind you, in one article I read this morning, China's recovery hopes were supporting oil while China's slowdown hopes were capping gains.

US Close - S&P 500 enters bear market, Fading Rallies, Deere shares hit hard, Footlocker rallies, Oil rises, Gold steady, Bitcoin lower
At the beginning of the year, no one thought that the S&P 500 was headed to bear market territory, but persistent inflation, another Fed policy mistake, and recession fears have unnerved investors. The S&P 500 has lost over 20% of its value from the January high and it seems that that technical selling will only accelerate.  The way macro backdrop is unfolding, it seems traders will continue to fade any rallies that emerge until the Fed starts to show signs that they are worried about financial

Oil drifting, gold rises on recession fears
Oil flat but risks remain to the upside It's been another volatile week of trade in oil but Brent and WTI are set to end it roughly where they started. They're seeing small gains on the day but price action remains very choppy.

US Close - Stocks near bear market, Oil higher on supply concerns, Gold pops, Bitcoin stabilizes
US stocks edged lower as Wall Street became more focused over a deteriorating growth outlook that could see stubbornly high pricing pressures for the Fed into a much more aggressive tightening cycle. It doesn’t seem like we will see a deceleration in pricing pressures and that has many traders worried that the Fed will send the economy into a recession.  Right now markets are functioning properly but if we see another 5% decline with stocks, credit conditions will worsen and that could provide t

Gold - Back in favour?
Or just a blip? Gold has very much fallen out of favour over the last month as it fell 10% on the back of coming within a whisker of $2,000. But has something changed? We've seen plenty of risk aversion in the markets over the last 24 hours, with stock markets falling heavily, and rather than being particularly supportive for the dollar, it's gold that has performed well which hasn't really been the case in recent weeks. Perhaps that's because higher inflation and therefore interest rate expe

Oil downturn continues, gold climbs
Oil slips as economic concerns weigh Those economic concerns are filtering through to the oil market which is seeing the third day of losses, down a little more than 1% today. We were bound to see some form of demand destruction if households continued to be squeezed from every angle and it seems we may be seeing that expectation weigh a little as we move into the end of the week. Meanwhile, China is reportedly looking to take advantage of discounted Russian crude to top up its reserves in a mov

US Close - Stocks Crumble, Oil lower on demand concerns, Gold holding up, Bitcoin lower
US stocks are crumbling after Wall Street worries about economic growth after hearing a chorus of concerns of higher prices that won’t be easing anytime soon. The strength of the consumer will be tested as both Walmart and Target signal rising pricing pressures are not easing.  The Dow Jones Industrial suffered its worst loss since 2020 as investors doubt the Fed will be able to deliver a soft landing as the inflation outlook might warrant much more aggressive tightening of monetary policy.  The

Oil rises as China reopens, gold unsteady
Oil higher as China starts reopening Oil prices are on the rise again as Shanghai takes a big step towards reopening following three days of no new cases in the broader community. Restrictions have been tight in many cities across China which have helped keep a lid on oil prices in this very tight market.

Oil falls on Venezuala and EU, gold dips
Venezuela/Europe send oil lower Overnight, oil prices touched multi-week highs until the US announced it was starting a process, potentially leading to an easing of sanctions on Venezuela. That immediately saw oil reverse all its impressive intraday gains and both Brent crude and WTI finished slightly lower on the day.

Asian equities are mostly higher
Asia markets ex-China show gains US equities rallied strongly overnight as US retail sales, industrial production, and manufacturing outperformed, while hawkish comments from Powell and former Chair Bernanke were ignored. The S&P 500 shot higher by 2.02%, the Nasdaq leapt 2.76%, and the Dow Jones gained 1.35%.

Oil surges, gold stronger
Oil  Crude prices initially surged as China’s fight against COVID appears to be headed in the right direction, but gave up a good amount of gains after US officials signaled that the strategy on Russian crude could switch from embargo to tariffs.  If the West decides to slap tariffs on Russian crude instead of an embargo, that would keep supplies on the market, which should put a cap on the recent crude rally.   The oil market remains tight but if the EU embraces the strategy of putting tarif

Oil moving higher, gold stable
Oil could go much higher Oil prices have hit their highest levels since early March as Europe continues to work towards a Russian embargo and China looks to ease Covid restrictions. The lockdowns have offset some of the concerns over supply disruptions amid Russian sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine.

Oil has support, gold recovers
Oil prices remain firm Oil prices have remained near multi-week highs this week, supported by surging gasoline and distillate prices in the US, and fears around an EU ban on Russian oil imports remaining in play. If markets start pricing in peak-Shanghai-lockdowns, that will be an additional supportive tailwind for oil prices. Brent crude rose by 2.45% to USD 113.85 a barrel overnight, where it remains in subdued Asian trading.
