Trump and Putin May Meet Ahead of Next G20 Summit

Russian leader Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump may meet before the next Group of 20 summit in July after the Kremlin hailed a restoration of respect in relations following their first phone talks.

Aides will work on a possible date and location for a meeting after Putin and Trump held “constructive” discussions that emphasized “respect as a very important principle in bilateral relations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call Monday. “A lack of mutual respect in previous years was largely the cause of the reversal and degradation in our relations.”

The conversation on Saturday went well “in a political and personal sense,” and was based on “the national interests of each country,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow. There was “mutual respect and a desire by both leaders to communicate without moralizing,” he said.
