Prime Minister Theresa May’s government is braced for defeat on a key vote in the House of Lords over the right of European Union nationals to stay in the U.K., a result that would complicate her Brexit timetable.
Labour and the Liberal Democrat opposition parties are uniting with rebels among May’s Conservatives to support an amendment to her EU withdrawal bill that would protect the rights of European citizens to remain living in Britain when the country leaves the bloc.
On the eve of the vote, Home Secretary Amber Rudd wrote to the Lords to provide reassurances that the issue is a “priority.” She praised the “vital contribution” that EU nationals in the U.K. make to the economy and society.
