Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Off Japan Coast

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Northern Japan early Tuesday. A warning that an up to one meter tsunami may hit Iwate Prefecture was issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency advised evacuating the coastal areas there immediately.

Iwate Prefecture is largely rural, with a total population of around 1.3 million. While the area has a nuclear power plant, it was not damaged, according to an NHK report.
