China leaders meet for the last time before next week’s transition

Top members of China’s ruling Communist Party began their final formal meeting in Beijing on Thursday ahead of a 10-yearly power transition next week, state press reported.

The plenum of the 17th Communist Party Central Committee is expected to result in the formal ousting of disgraced Bo Xilai and see senior members jostle for leadership roles.

The meeting will discuss amendments to the party charter and make proposals to be tabled at the 18th Party Congress to open on November 8, the official Xinhua news agency said.

President Hu Jintao is expected to step down as head of the party at the congress, handing over to a new leadership for the next 10 years to be headed by current Vice President Xi Jinping.
