Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s political support has sharply eroded for the first time since he came to power, as a feud over a secrecy bill dominated the final days of a parliament session that was to have focused on Japan’s economic recovery.
A loss of support as Mr. Abe enters his second year in office could hamper his agenda to remake the economy and foreign policy—goals that have inspired optimism after years of political gridlock and economic malaise.
His high support over the past year has been unusual among recent prime ministers. He knows this well, having abruptly ended a first term as prime minister after just a year in 2007 when backing drained away and his party lost an election.
